UV Health & Safety
UV safety in the workplace
Ultraviolet equipment is used safely in workplaces every day, and a little planning is all it takes to keep it that way. If you use artificial UV sources at work, there are legal requirements you need to know about.
What the regulations say
In Great Britain, the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 (AOR 2010) apply to employers whose workers may be exposed to artificial optical radiation, including UV. They implement the EU’s Directive 2006/25/EC, which sets similar minimum health and safety standards across Europe.
In practice, employers are expected to:
- Assess the risk from UV sources used in the workplace
- Eliminate or reduce exposure so far as is reasonably practicable
- Keep exposure within the legal limits
- Provide information and training to anyone who may be affected
- Review the assessment when equipment, processes or people change
None of this is meant to put you off using UV. A clear assessment, the right controls and informed staff are usually all that’s needed, and it protects your people and your business.
